FOUR DEAD, 16 INJURED AS BRAKE FAILURE TRIGGERS MULTI-VEHICLE CRASH IN MERU

MERU COUNTY — Four people were killed and 16 others injured after an Isuzu lorry reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into three vehicles at Riverland, near Rubis Petrol Station along the Meru–Nkubu road, on Thursday night.

The injured were rushed to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they were receiving treatment by Friday morning, with some reportedly fighting for their lives.

Meru OCPD Hassan Bashir said the lorry, registration number KDC 187M, was travelling from Meru town towards Nkubu when it lost control while descending, causing the crash.

“Actually, the vehicle number KDC 187M, Isuzu lorry, sort of lost control because it was moving towards Nkubu general direction and, as it was descending, it lost control due to brake failure. In the process, it rammed into about three vehicles,” Bashir said.

He confirmed that four people had died, comprising three men and one woman, while 16 others sustained injuries.

“Four people actually succumbed to injuries: three males and one female. And 16 were injured,” Bashir added.

The accident caused concern among motorists and residents along the busy Meru–Nkubu highway, highlighting the dangers posed by mechanical failure, particularly on descending sections of the road.

Police are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the reported brake failure and the condition of the vehicles involved.
