KATHURI MURUNGI PETITIONS SENATE OVER DELAYED UPGRADE OF EGOJI TEACHERS COLLEGE

NAIROBI— Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has petitioned the Senate to intervene in the stalled plan to upgrade Egoji Teachers Training College in South Imenti Constituency into a university college.

The petition, dated September 14 and presented on behalf of the Egoji Community Welfare Forum, seeks investigations into the delayed transition and a definitive decision on whether the institution should become a constituent college or be absorbed into a public university.

The petition cites three previous initiatives: a 2007 proposal involving Kenyatta University, a 2018–2019 initiative involving Meru University of Science and Technology, and a community-led effort between 2020 and 2022 under the leadership of then South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi. However, the efforts did not result in the proposed upgrade.

Established in 1960 and sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Meru, the college occupies land donated by the local community. The petitioners argue that upgrading it would expand access to degree-level teacher training, research and innovation while supporting the practical skills approach promoted by the Competency-Based Curriculum.

The petition asks the Senate to summon relevant authorities under Article 125 of the Constitution to explain why earlier commitments were not implemented and recommend a lasting solution. The community says the prolonged delay has hindered the institution’s growth and its potential contribution to local socioeconomic development.
