Senator Kathuri Murungi has raised concerns over the politicisation of tea affairs and the 0.8 per cent tea levy, citing them as key issues that must be scrutinised amid low bonus payments to farmers. He has challenged the relevant authorities and stakeholders to come out clearly and explain to farmers the factors behind the disappointing payouts.
Murungi has urged the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and other industry stakeholders and political leaders to unite and petition for the removal of the 0.8 per cent levy, arguing that tea farmers deserve transparency and better returns from their hard work.

The senator has further pledged to defend the interests of tea farmers in Parliament, calling for accountability and collective action to address the challenges facing the sector. He said the tea bonus debate should focus on clear explanations and practical solutions rather than political blame games that leave farmers uncertain about their earnings.
